Bio Matt Plezier

Matt Plezier, an alias of Marcel Palijama, is a self taught Dutch visual artist. Whose work reflects upon issues of alienation, anonymity, (in)visibility and ways of constructing and disseminating narrative. Mirroring his own multi-cultural background that provides its viewer a different narrative in an unambiguous and sometimes confrontational form.

His process includes the use and experimentation of his own photography, re-photographed newspaper images, image appropriation, found objects, text and silkscreens on various materials for mixed media installations and publications. Photography is not a means to an end but a tool to document and excavate.
Self publishing is a major part of his art practice from producing art books to zines. After having ran a hardcore/punk record- and a t-shirt label since the mid-nineties he started concentrating on his art and publishing in 2015. He has produced close to 100 titles, a diverse assortment of zines, prints and books through his publishing imprint: MonoRhetorik.

In the three years of publishing Matt Plezier has participated in various major Art Book Fairs: Fruit (Bologna, Italy), Wiels (Brussels, Belgium), Unseen (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Ass Book Fair (Paris, France), Offprint (Paris, France), NY Art Book Fair (NY, USA) and many more. In 2018 he has been awarded the Shannon Michael Cane Award by Printed Matter for the New York Art Book Fair.
